Puget Sound Partnership’s State of the Sound Reports

I was hired to edit the Puget Sound Partnership’s biennial State of the Sound reports for Washington State in 2012, 2013, and 2015. These included separate reports to the community and to the governor and legislature, as well as the highly technical Report on the Puget Sound Vital Signs, which provides an overview of the status and trends in Puget Sound recovery and included the findings of the Puget Sound Ecosystem Monitoring Program.

In 2012, the Partnership did not have an in-house style guide at the time, and past reports and other documents were not consistent in usage, punctuation, voice, or style due to their large numbers of contributors from many different state and local agencies. I helped the Partnership decide on a style guide and created an in-house guide for the report, and I edited it accordingly for consistency and style. This required a variety of different editing approaches, as some sections needed only minimal copy editing, while others required substantive revisions. I wrote some of the sections, including those on climate change and ocean acidification, based on materials provided by the Partnership as well as my own research.
